Materials & shaders

Materials and shaders control how surfaces look when rendered. In Blender you build them in the Shader Editor from nodes, using image textures (PBR maps such as base colour, roughness and normal) or procedural textures made from noise and maths nodes, with no image files at all. This page lists material packs, single shaders, matcaps and texture sets from independent creators on Gumroad. Several are free; use the Free price filter to see only those.

About Blender materials

Procedural materials don't depend on resolution and are easy to adjust, but they can render more slowly and usually need baking before they'll work in a game engine. Image-based materials export more easily and usually come at 2K or 4K.

Many packs come with their materials already set up as assets, so you can drag them from the Asset Browser onto objects. If not, go to File › Append, open the .blend file and choose from the Material folder. Matcaps are different: they only change how the viewport looks in Solid shading, to help you judge form while sculpting, and don't affect the final render.

Questions

Where can I find free Blender materials?
Use the Free price filter on this page. Check each licence before you use a material in commercial work.
How do I add a material pack to the Asset Browser?
In Edit › Preferences › File Paths › Asset Libraries, add the folder that contains the pack's .blend files. Materials the creator marked as assets will then appear in the Asset Browser.
Do procedural materials look the same in EEVEE and Cycles?
Not always. Check which engine the creator used for the preview images.
